He is said to come down to Earth every now and then, each time to fulfill a specific purpose. The purpose of his sixth avatar, Parusharama was to curb the ego of the ruling classes. In the form of Parusharama, Vishnu carried a huge celestial axe that he used to slaughter the impious kings and princes. Rama is the main character in the epic Ramayana. In the epic, his wife Sita was kidnapped by the demon king Ravana. He took her away on his sky chariot when Rama was distracted, chasing a deer. Jataayu, the king of the birds heard the commotion and flew up to fight Ravana and rescue Sita. Ravana was too strong for him and cut off his wings. The image is unusual because Vishnu and Shiva are usually worshipped separately.
