<description>Following Vishnu's avatars around South India

Mythological Research, Documentary Photography

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans166.jpg" width="670" height="427" width_o="2048" height_o="1307" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans166_o.jpg" data-mid="10211088" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Aihole, South India
Vishnu is a cosmic entity worshipped by Hindus. He is said to come down to Earth every now and then, each time to fulfill a specific purpose. The purpose of his sixth avatar, Parusharama was to curb the ego of the ruling classes. In the form of Parusharama, Vishnu carried a huge celestial axe that he used to slaughter the impious kings and princes. Pictured above is the town (Aihole) where Parusharama sat down to wash his bloody axe when he was finished.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans4.jpg" width="670" height="455" width_o="2048" height_o="1392" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans4_o.jpg" data-mid="10211069" border="0" align="left"/&#62;On top of a hill in Gokarna
Parusharama was filled with remorse because of the violent nature of his actions. After he washed his axe, he came to Gokarna to meditate (with tears in his eyes).

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans106.jpg" width="670" height="460" width_o="2048" height_o="1407" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans106_o.jpg" data-mid="10211081" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Beach in Gokarna
Varuna, the ruler of the sea took pity on Parusharama. He appeared out of the water and instructed Parusharama to throw his axe from this spot as far as he could. Parusharama flung his wretched axe all the way to the bottom tip of India.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/test2noborder.jpg" width="670" height="213" width_o="1500" height_o="477" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/test2noborder_o.jpg" data-mid="10680672" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Three Views of Ganesha, Hampi
Ganesha is another commonly worshipped celestial being. There are several stories told to explain why Ganesha's right tusk is amputated. One of the explanations is that Parusharama threw his axe at Ganesha during an argument. Ganesha moved his head out of the way just in time, with the axe clipping his right tusk.

There are four temples cut into the side of the mountain. The third one is
dedicated to Vishnu.

One of Vishnu's most famous avatars is the Rama (Chandra) avatar. Rama is the main character in the epic Ramayana. In the epic, his wife Sita was kidnapped by the demon king Ravana. He took her away on his sky chariot when Rama was distracted, chasing a deer. Jataayu, the king of the birds heard the commotion and flew up to fight Ravana and rescue Sita. Ravana was too strong for him and cut off his wings. Pictured above is the spot where Jataayu is said to have fallen from the sky.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans217.jpg" width="670" height="454" width_o="2048" height_o="1389" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans217_o.jpg" data-mid="10211176" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Hampi
Desperate to find his wife Sita, Rama sought the help of a dethroned king named Sugriva. Sugriva was hiding in the forests of Kishkinda (the area pictured above). Rama helped Sugriva regain his kingdom. To return the favor, Sugriva offered Rama his massive army to look for Sita and fight Ravana.

Hanuman was Rama's most brave and loyal companion during the search and rescue of Sita. Pictured above is Hanuman's birthplace.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans19.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="2048" height_o="1363" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/scans19_o.jpg" data-mid="10211248" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Chennakeshava Temple, Belur
Vishnu is notorious for his good looks. The word 'Chennakeshava' roughly translates to 'Pretty Vishnu'.

Vishnu's snake, Anantha (translated as 'the never ending') is a symbol of Vishnu. Anantha is coiled around the symbol of Shiva (another major celestial being in Hindu mythology). Shiva's linga protrudes from the coils under Anantha's hood. The image is unusual because Vishnu and Shiva are usually worshipped separately. Here the symbols are combined, possibly to suggest that Shiva and Vishnu are the same.

Narasimha was Vishnu's man-lion avatar. Narasimha is famous for ripping out the guts of a non-believer named Hiranyakashipu.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/vishnu4.jpg" width="670" height="946" width_o="1000" height_o="1413" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/vishnu4_o.jpg" data-mid="13225380" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Krishna Temple, Hampi
Krishna is probably Vishnu's most well known avatar. Krishna is the eighth avatar
of Vishnu.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/vishnu3.jpg" width="670" height="308" width_o="1000" height_o="461" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/151732/2048404/vishnu3_o.jpg" data-mid="13225386" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Buddhist Monks at Namdroling Monastery
Many accounts claim that the Buddha was the ninth avatar of Vishnu. Then again,
many do not.
